Programs
The Bicycle for Alternative Transportation (BAT)
Program is a bicycle lending program where people can check out bikes to ride for free! BAT takes used bicycles that have been donated, repairs them with the wonderful work of volunteers and support from awesome groups including, New Belgium Brewing and Balanced Rock Foundation.
The primary BAT hub is located in El Portal, California just outside Yosemite National Park. The first BAT bike was lent out in 2006. Now we have over 100 bikes checked out in Yosemite, and Sacramento, California.
Thousand of miles have been ridden, instead of driven thanks to this program.

or find us at the El Portal Community Hall every other Thursday from 6pm until 8pm.
Here is what people are saying:
I checked out a bike for the whole summer from the BAT program in El Portal to use to commute to work each day. It would only be about a 20-minute walk, but I can't usually manage to allow time for that in the morning, so without a bike I would probably end up driving the short distance way too often. With a bike I can be a better citizen!

My bike is so fun to ride to the river. I just love getting the exercise and fresh air.

Fix a Flat
Fix a Flat is an annual bike maintenance education day hosted by Sustainable Action at the El Portal Spring Fling. Bike repair experts are ready with their tools to diagnose and repair your bike. Usually this means we fix lots of flat tires. Although loose head sets have been tightened and brake pads adjusted. Our goal is to help get more people on bikes and riding them with joy!
